About Me
A Chinese-Australian artist who finally got confident in her name Dan, which means peony, a flowering plant instead of a male Australian name.
A school teacher turned new media artist who trained in New York City; Dan loves making interactive playful installations for kids and kids at heart. From her base in Melbourne, she runs workshops around the world that combines technology and art which encourages participants to play with their imagination through the process of making.
In 2019 Dan returns to Melbourne to develop her performance art practice mentored by Tony Yap and Yumi Umiumare. The body's curiosity have given her new freedom from her disability and everyday pain.
Since Coronavirus lockdown, she has been experimenting video art of her movement and vocal expression. Her performance often draws inspiration from her disability and cross-cultural perspectives and creates a dreamy surreal reality.

Kaleidoscope
An interactive installation that transforms participants and daily mundane objects to a colorful and surreal world. The web camera captures real-time image and then turns it into computer-generated images in an aesthetically whimsical projection. Participants intuitively learn to utilize the system to change the visual effect of the kaleidoscopic image.

Disability Seeking Enthusiasm
Since diagnosed with Arthritis last year, Dan has been seeking new ways of exploring freedom and enthusiasm of the body. How can one find new movement in the disability? This inquiry took her to develop her performance art practice.
Produced and performed by Dan Wei, "Little Tadpoles Looking for Mama" is a dance with a difference where nature meets nurture; a dialogue of sound and movement that explores love, loss and our everlasting search for human connection. |
